One of the very first questions people ask when gearing up for a photoshoot is: “What on earth should I wear?”. Some prefer to look exactly as they do in everyday life, others use the opportunity to experiment with a different style, and some are eager to show off a brand-new dress. There is no single right answer, but let’s explore a few important factors to keep in mind:
1. The Overall Concept
Whenever I plan a session, I love putting together a mood board after we chat. That way, we can both see the vibe we’re aiming for. From there, I’ll suggest key clothing items that match our vision. It’s absolutely a team effort! If you’ve been dreaming about ethereal shots in a flowing dress by the ocean but end up arriving in jeans and a tee, that whimsical magic just isn’t going to happen—and you’ll probably feel let down by the results. Your outfit is a huge part of the shoot, so don’t brush it aside.
2. Color
A common rule for nearly any photoshoot: avoid loud prints, sparkly bits, or anything too distracting. For the style I typically shoot, I recommend simple, clean colors: white, beige, black, gray, maybe a touch of blue. These natural tones look gorgeous and effortless against the stunning landscapes around San Francisco.
3. Texture
If I’m all about keeping color minimal, then texture is where you can really play. A fluffy sweater catching the wind, or a sheer skirt dancing with the sunset glow—those little details can bring your images to life. I also love cozy wool, breezy linen, a hint of silk, or any other fabrics that add that wow factor without overwhelming the shot.
4. Comfort
So you’ve got your base colors, your fun textures, and you’re ready to rock the concept. What’s left? Making sure you feel comfortable and amazing in your clothes. Some outfits give us that boost of confidence, while others can make us feel fidgety (and that’s definitely not what we want). Test everything at home: walk around, spin in front of the mirror, sit down, stretch—whatever helps you see if it feels right. If a neckline has you tugging and adjusting every other minute, it’s probably not your best bet. The last thing we want is for you to be self-conscious during the session. Your clothes should elevate your mood and make you feel like you can take on the world!
